National Hydrography Dataset

The National Hydrography Dataset (NHD) provided comprehensive geospatial information on the water drainage network of the United States. It encompassed a wide array of features, including rivers, streams, canals, lakes, ponds, coastlines, dams, and streamgages, offering a foundational resource for various hydrological and environmental analyses.

As of October 1, 2023, the NHD was officially retired from active maintenance. While NHD data continues to be accessible for download and use, it will no longer receive updates. Users seeking the most current hydrography data for the U.S. are directed to the succeeding initiative, the 3D Hydrography Program (3DHP).

This dataset, maintained by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), supported a broad spectrum of scientific endeavors, including studies in water resources, climate, coastal dynamics, geology, and natural hazards. Its availability ensures continued access to historical hydrographic data for research and planning.
