The G-Econ research project is dedicated to creating a geophysically based data set on economic activity for the entire world. This initiative aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of global economic distribution by mapping economic output to specific geographic cells.
The current publicly available dataset, GEcon 4.0, details "gross cell product" (GCP), which is the regional equivalent of gross domestic product, for all terrestrial regions. This data is measured at a 1-degree longitude by 1-degree latitude resolution and covers the years 1990, 1995, 2000, and 2005, encompassing 27,500 terrestrial observations globally. Future updates to this valuable time-series data will be posted as they become available.
The project is led by Professor William Nordhaus of Yale University and Professor Xi Chen of Quinnipiac University, making it a collaborative academic effort to advance global economic and geographic research.
